Casting a shadow on yourself

My friend Randall over at XKCD posted something very interesting about casted shadows, if they were visible, and their size compared to objects on Earth. Posted here is the comic, and of course, a link to this brilliant comic strip 🙂

If an object in space, was positioned with a light source behind it, what size of shadow would it cast on Earth? If it were possible without distortion, how much of an eclipse would it actually cause? Here’s the relative sizes. Enjoy!
